As there is a growing recognition of the immune system’s central role in both cancer progression and cardiovascular disease, this special focus issue dedicated to immunology and cardio-oncology seeks to further bridge these 2 fields, building on our previously published works1,2 highlighting this shared biology. This issue spans the basic mechanisms and clinical effects of not only modern cancer immune therapies but also highlights the central role of the immune system in cytotoxic chemotherapy. We bring together cutting-edge research that elucidates shared immune pathways, biomarkers, and mechanisms underlying both oncologic and cardiovascular outcomes. Ultimately, we seek to advance the science and clinical care in this emerging intersection between cardio-oncology and immunology.
This issue would not be possible without the dedication and tremendous work of the JACC Journals Editors, including Pilar Martin, who played a central role in conceptualizing this issue, and Zhao Wang, Carmen Bergom, and Matthias Nahrendorf. This issue would also not be possible without the tireless, insightful, and rigorous work of our Guest Associate Editors, including Alessandra Ghigo, Aarti Asnani, Marinos Kallikourdis, and Wouter Meijers. I am indebted to each for their advice, service, and leadership in this emerging and rapidly growing field.
We hope that this issue, featuring authoritative, accessible, and evidence-based state-of-the-art reviews and primers, and rigorous and innovative original research, will further drive forward your science and clinical care.
