Former consultant pathologist North Lonsdale Hospital, Barrow-in-Furness (b 1916; q Manchester 1939; FRCPath), died from colorectal cancer on 20 October 2005. Jim first worked in general practice in Bacup, Lancashire. He joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in 1940 and was posted in 1941 to Singapore, whence he escaped to Karachi to work on malaria control at the World Health Organization headquarters. This work was instrumental in his decision to specialise in pathology. During 1950-78 he was consultant pathologist at North Lonsdale Hospital, Barrow-in-Furness, with histology as his main interest. He was a fellow of the Manchester Medical Society for 58 years and was made a life fellow in 1982. He leaves a wife, Rennie; two children; and two grandchildren.
