Former general practitioner Oakham, Rutland (b 1924; q The London Hospital 1949; MA, DObst RCOG), died from complications of myelodysplasia on 3 July 2005.

David served as a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps and was stationed in Malaya, where he took part in the “Emergency of 1952” as a family medical officer, caring for the wives of Ghurkhas in the jungle. Later he was posted to a services mission in Burma, where he looked after the families of embassy staff. As well as being a general practitioner, he was medical and anaesthetics officer at Rutland Memorial Hospital and medical officer at Ashwell Prison. He also gave anaesthetics for the school dental officer for Rutland. He retired in 1991. He leaves a wife, Halina; three sons; and four grandchildren.
