Pan- and auto-agglutination in albumin: a serological and immunochemical study of five cases

Abstract

Serological and immunochemical studies of five sera positive for `albumin auto-agglutinating factor' (AAF) suggest that this factor is an IgG globulin. We postulate that the AAF is an antibody to albumin, and that the observed reaction is due to the adsorption on to red cells of soluble antigen—antibody (BSA—AAF) complexes. Albumin preparations which do not react appear to contain polymers which probably inhibit the reaction.
