Former consultant ophthalmologist Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital and United Birmingham Hospital Group (b 1919; q St Andrews 1943; FRCS), died from oesophageal cancer on 16 July 2005.

Before demobilisation as captain in 1947 Martin was in charge of the ophthalmic department of 92 British General Hospital. He was appointed consultant surgeon at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital in 1950. Martin developed the first specialist glaucoma service in the West Midlands and devoted much of his working life to understanding this condition. He also maintained his interest in paediatric ophthalmology at the Birmingham Children's Hospital. He was master of the Oxford Ophthalmological Congress, 1976-8. Predeceased by his wife, Gladys, in 2001, he leaves four children and five grandchildren.
