Consultant ophthalmic (vitreoretinal) surgeon Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield (b 1961; q Cambridge 1984; FRCS, FRCOphth), died in a road crash on 16 October 2005.
James started his ophthalmic training at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham. He was then registrar at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, and senior registrar in the Cardiff/Newport rotation. He held vitreoretinal fellowships at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, in 1995 and at Moorfields Eye Hospital in 1996-8. He became consultant in Sheffield in 1998, subspecialising in vitreoretinal surgery. His hard work and commitment contributed greatly to the development and expansion of the vitreoretinal unit, a local and tertiary referral service for Sheffield and the surrounding areas. He leaves a wife, Judith, and three children.
