Dr. Gary J. Miller: A Tribute

Michael K Brawer
PMCID: PMC1476073

Dr. Gary Miller passed away while jogging on May 25, 2001. A gifted pathologist and researcher, Dr. Miller spent the majority of his career studying the prostate. He provided keen insights into the pathogenesis of prostatic carcinoma, and his excellent teaching ability afforded a greater comprehension amongst urologists of the vicissitudes of this most common malignancy. He participated in the important urologic educational forums and was always a member of the faculty of the International Prostate Cancer Update annual meeting. Gary never ceased to express his passion about pathology, and while a staunch defender of his beliefs, he was always willing to consider dissenting views. As Professor of Pathology and Urology at the University of Colorado and Director of the Urologic Oncology Research Program for the University of Colorado Cancer Center, Dr. Miller maintained active clinical and research programs and served as the reference pathologist on several pivotal prostate cancer trials.

Born in 1950 in Silver Creek, NY, he attended the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972, a Masters degree in 1974, a Medical Degree in 1976, and a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology in 1998. His entire academic career was spent at the University of Colorado, where he was named Director of the Urologic Cancer Research Program in 2000. He received innumerable awards, edited numerous journals and books, and published over 100 research papers and book chapters. His loss to the cancer research community, and particularly to those of us with specialties in prostate cancer, is exceeded only by the personal loss to his family—his wife Heidi and sons Jason and Corey.

He will be missed by all. We dedicate this supplement to his memory.
