Live demonstration of the capabilities of the VistA Free/Open Source Stack EHR/EMR

Brian Lord
PMCID: PMC1560659

VistA is a full-featured, health information system (HIS) which includes an Electronic Health Record/Electronic Medical Record (EHR/EMR) developed by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. VistA has been successfully deployed in 300 clinics, 170 VA hospitals and approximately 30 private sector sites. There are several commercial ventures offering installation and support for OpenVistA and VistA. VistA may be the only successful National health-care IT infrastructure software ever developed. VistA is in the public domain, and is accepted as compatible with Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) licenses. VistA now runs on a completely FOSS stack which is defined as an entire software platform from the operating system to end-user applications that are entirely FOSS licensed. VistA is based on a GNU GPL licensed MUMPS compiler called GT.Mtm and runs on GNU/Linux. The presentation will feature a live demonstration which will show OpenVistA's characteristics and capabilities.
