Douglas Stevenson qualified with commendation from St Andrews University in 1942. After house jobs at Dundee Royal Infirmary he served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve for the remainder of the second world war. Subsequently he qualified FRCP Ed and worked as a consultant chest physician in St Luke's Hospital, Bradford, where, with the support of his health visitors, he virtually eradicated pulmonary tuberculosis among the immigrant population in the 1960s. He was a keen rugby player in his younger days but in later years enjoyed gardening, golfing, reading, and socialising.
