After national service in the Royal Air Force, James Ward (“Jim”) started his pathology career in 1948 at the United Liverpool Hospitals. He became assistant pathologist at the North Lonsdale Hospital, Barrow-in-Furness, in 1953, leaving for his consultant post in the Borders in 1965, where he remained until retirement in 1982. As one of the last general pathologists he was amused, and management surprised, that he was replaced by four consultants. On retirement he moved to Grange-over-Sands to be near the fells he had walked so extensively previously. He leaves a wife, Phyllis; two sons; and four grandchildren.
