Maurice Aloysius Carroll, the youngest of seven children, was brought up on a farm in the Republic of Ireland and funded himself through university. He came to England after qualifying, initially starting in general practice in Darlaston in the west Midlands. In March 1942 he moved to Trimdon, County Durham, where he worked in the same practice for the rest of his career. After several attempts to retire, he finally stopped practising in 1999—a grand total of 57 years. He always looked after his patients in a holistic manner. Maurice also enjoyed his local church, classical music, reading, and electronics. He never married.
