Abstract

RFLP patterns from more than 3,700 individuals, collected by several southeastern laboratories, were compared using a series of mathematical match criteria to determine the probability of randomly matching two samples from different individuals. Data from five loci (D1S7, D2S44, D4S139, D10S28, and D17S79) were compared in all possible combinations. The probability of declaring a false match under any of the match criteria decreased by at least one order of magnitude for each locus added to the comparison. No false matches were declared across four or more loci when match criteria approximately equivalent to that of forensic laboratories were used.
