Presented before the Committee on Social Policy for Health Care of the Committee on Special Studies of The New York Academy of Medicine on February 21, 1964. Many of the problems touched upon in this paper are discussed much more fully in the author's recent book of the same title, The Economics of American Medicine.1 It is hoped that the reader will refer to this book for a deeper understanding of current medical care problems.
