Died Oct. 19, 2006, aged 93. “He is survived by his wife, Anne (Irving), son, Philip (Jane) and daughter, Nancy (Sandy Dorley). Arnold was pre-deceased by his son, Timothy and his siblings, Henry, Ted and Else. Following medical school and service aboard a Royal Canadian Navy destroyer in World War II, Dr. Johnson became a pioneer in Canadian cardiology, in a long career at the Montreal Children's Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital and McGill University. He is known for innovation, performing the first heart catheterization in Canada for the investigation of congenital heart disease, pioneering the first implantable cardiac pacemaker and establishing the first comprehensive hospital-based CPR program. In 1971, he left McGill to pursue the emerging field of clinical epidemiology. He joined the faculty at McMaster University's Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics in 1974, led the creation of the Regional Cardiovascular Program and later helped to establish a focus on medical ethics as Professor Emeritus. He was active at McMaster until he retired at age 90. Throughout his life, he was an avid golfer, photographer, traveler, birdwatcher and, in his day, a fearless water-skier. With his reputation for critical thinking, high standards of clinical care and thoughtful compassion, his influence on generations of medical students, professional colleagues, patients, friends and family is legendary.”
