George Lyall Cantrell served with the Royal Army Medical Corps, mainly in Austria, and when demobilised began ophthalmic training at the Royal Eye Hospital Manchester. In 1952 he was appointed registrar and later senior registrar at Bristol Eye Hospital. In 1956 he was appointed consultant at the West of England Eye Infirmary, where he greatly enjoyed his work and was loved and respected by the many he was able to serve. He retired in 1983. He had a special interest in the West of England School for Children with little or no Sight and was a governor and later a trustee of the school. He was an enthusiastic editor of Iscatape, which produced Talking Books for the Blind. He loved matters historical and published a History of the West of England Eye Infirmary. George enjoyed a happy and busy family life and leaves his wife, Celia; three children; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
