‘Surgery’ is a very good addition to current general surgical texts for undergraduate students and junior doctors. It is compact and describes common surgical conditions in an easy to read format. The first section details clinical conditions according to systems and the second deals with peri- and postoperative patient management. There are clinical scenarios which not only create an interest for the reader but also stimulate a thought process for situations which will be encountered in clinical practice. Key points for conditions and investigations are summarised separately, which makes them easier to revise and remember. Reading is further aided by radiographs, coloured illustrations and clinical photographs.

This is a suitable book for undergraduate students as an aid to a larger text which has covered the basics of surgery and differential diagnosis of clinical conditions. It will also be very useful as a quick reference for junior doctors working in surgery.
