Abstract
Seventy-two patients with multiple myeloma were surveyed with respect to the causation of pain. Almost all of those who had an abrupt onset of pain showed a fracture at the site of pain. About one-half of those with a gradual onset of pain also had a fracture. The great majority of osteolytic lesions were painless. The relief afforded by local irradiation, which could not have been due to healing of the fracture, may have been due to an effect on extruded tumour tissue.
