Former consultant in rheumatology and rehabilitation Kent (b London 1921; q Trinity College Dublin 1944; MD, DPhysMed, FRCPI), died from Parkinson's disease on 26 July 2003.
Dick Barter was the driving force behind the Foreland School in Broadstairs, which provides support and education for children with disabilities. He set up a unit for disabled patients at the former Princess Mary's Hospital, Margate, and became known for his work in providing medical rehabilitation to patients in Kent. He served for a year as a doctor in the Royal Air Force. He enjoyed travelling, bird watching, and gardening. Predeceased by his first wife, Jane, he leaves his second wife, Sheila, and two children.
