Former clinical assistant in drug therapy St Mary's Hospital, Paddington (b Dunedin, New Zealand, 1928; q Otago University, Dunedin, 1952), died from bowel cancer on 7 June 2003.
Joan worked in Auckland and Wellington before coming to England. She obtained her FFARCS and worked at Queen Charlotte's and the Chelsea Hospital for Women, and then as registrar at Charing Cross. However, she had an attack of brucellosis and switched to psychiatry, obtaining her MRCPsych at the age of 55. For 20 years she worked at St Mary's, first in general psychiatry and then in drug therapy. Joan retained her love of New Zealand, returning annually for a holiday. She leaves a husband, James, and four children.
