Aggregated and Free Bacteria as Food Sources for Heterotrophic Microflagellates

Abstract

Laboratory evidence for the selective grazing of aggregated bacteria by a Bodo sp. and free bacteria by a Paraphysomonas sp. is presented. The relevance of different microflagellate feeding mechanisms with respect to prey distribution in the natural environment is discussed.
