Abstract
The immunological privilege of the hamster cheek pouch has been attributed to properties of its areolar connective tissue. This tissue was investigated using a range of biochemical, histochemical and immunological procedures. An unusual feature of the tissue is the presence of an, as yet incompletely characterized, acidic mucosubstance of mast cell origin. Also present are heparin and probably keratan sulphate. Attention is drawn to the highly sulphated mucopolysaccharides as possible agents which can prevent immunological recognition.
