The Risky Business of Inuit Adolescence

Abstract

As GP-pediatrician in Iqaluit, NWT, the author had the opportunity to learn more about the Inuit and their culture. With little to occupy their time outside of school hours, the teenaged boys and girls became involved in risk taking and experimentation. The author reviews the incidence of substance abuse, suicide, and adolescent pregnancy and also discusses why the future still holds hope for the Inuit.
