Editor—I do not quite buy the story Levy is selling.1
Firstly, I think it is high time that leaders in the developing countries became responsible and accountable for their actions. Things going bad in the developing countries, with fingers pointed rashly at the West, is the very reason why we are not making any meaningful progress. It is high time developing countries cleaned up their closets and addressed the real issues steering this brain drain—corruption, nepotism, and lack of accountability.
Secondly, this idea of a course that is recognised only locally, as it were, defeats the whole idea of freedom, ambition, and excellence that we dreamt of day in day out as high school children. It is this idea of academic and professional excellence which drove me, and I believe many of my colleagues, into the dynamic field of medicine. Taking that international recognition away from the degree would only serve to kill children's dreams and drive away vibrant future doctors.
