From 1955 to 1957 John Webster served in the Royal Air Force on a troop ship involved in the preparation of Christmas Island for the first British hydrogen bomb test. He trained in Sheffield before being appointed to Southampton with a special interest in vascular surgery. In 1988 he received an award from the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland for the most outstanding contribution of the year to surgical education. He was a talented pianist and organist. He leaves a wife, Joy; three children; and 11 grandchildren.
