Abstract

The Clinical Laboratory at the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC), Bethesda, MD, has an automated Laboratory Information System which accepts requests for tests, performs certain tests and reports the results back to the requester. This system, which has been in operation for 7 years, is now being upgraded to integrate some of the recent advances in computer technology in medical care. This paper describes the design and development of an on-line order entry device, called a Laboratory Request Terminal (LRT), to interface with the laboratory system. It also describes the tasks of the software in the terminal which support the terminal functions and relieve both the central computer and the interconnecting lines of significant workload.
