Removal of Impacted Deflated Foley Catheter from Male Urethra

Ugochuku Okonkwo 1
PMCID: PMC2216733

After deflating the balloon of a Foley catheter, it can become impacted at the urethral meatus, making complete removal difficult for the clinician and painful for the patient.

Remove the needle from an intravenous cannula leaving the plastic sheath. Discard the needle responsibly. Plug a syringe of lubricating anaesthetic gel into the plastic sheath. Pass the plastic sheath into the urethra alongside the Foley catheter. Inject the gel into the urethra then withdraw the plastic sheath. After the gel has taken effect, apply gentle traction to the Foley catheter.
