Abstract
Multifacility health care systems share a mandate to provide comprehensive care to beneficiaries, special communications requirements, and the need for data compatibility among facilities. Federal regulations impose further conditions on the design of their medical information systems. The Public Health Automated Medical Information System (PHAMIS) is designed to meet the clinical data processing requirements of the 9 hospitals and 26 free-standing clinics of the USPHS. Although three hospitals have implemented PHAMIS modules, they now operate independently. PHAMIS is being redesigned for implementation on a central timesharing computer, with patient identification across facilities to permit a single integrated medical database. The PHAMIS approach is cost-effective and meets the needs of a federal multifacility health care system.
