The Use of the Computer to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Patient Teaching Programs

Jack Goldstein
PMCID: PMC2232001

Abstract

This paper describes an interactive system that allows computer entry of patient's responses to a series of questions on diabetes self-care; interprets these responses; provides a printout of deficiencies of patient's knowledge of self-care and stores patient identification, history and results of testing. The data base can be used: to determine if the teaching program has been effective in transmitting essential information to patients, and, when linked to clinical parameters, to ascertain the impact of patient training on behavior and complications.
