Abstract

An adaptation of the Turing Test was used to evaluate the knowledge of a computer based expert system, the COMMES-Nursing Protocol Consultant (NPC), which provides decision support for nursing care planning. A panel of nurses (n=106) with expertise in specific content domains or quality assurance compared nursing protocols written by the computer consultant with protocols written by qualified human nurse consultants, evaluating them on criteria of relevance, comprehension, accuracy, currency, overall importance and usefulness to planning care and standards of care. Aspects of content validity and face validity were also considered. Results demonstrated that rankings of the computer consultant's protocols were comparable to or better than rankings given protocol sets written by educators or clinicians.
