Abstract

The Hospital Operating Room Network (HORNET) which is now functional, consists of a set of computer hardware and software for monitoring patients in the operating rooms and performing related administrative functions. It has been used to obtain, analyze and collate perioperative information about these patients as well as the monitoring process. Data base accumulation has emphasized hemodynamic behavior, e.g., pulse rate and blood oxygenation, where difficulties are first manifested. This information has been analyzed statistically and has suggested “knowledge rules” for monitoring and risk management of the patient population. We plan to incorporate the knowledge rules into a prototype expert system seeking to maximize the efficacy of alarm information regarding patient management, with the immediate aim of minimizing the number of “false positive” alarms.
