Abstract
Lesions of porcine atrophic rhinitis are typically evaluated by a veterinarian's visual inspection of a cross-sectioned pig snout. We describe the development of a system to automatically evaluate these lesions from a digital image of the pig snout. Preliminary results indicate that an automatic system which measures the relative areas of structures in the pig's nasal cavity yields results which correlate only weakly with subjective expert opinion. Other methods of automated measurements are currently being developed (e.g., perimeter ratios) which may correlate more closely with expert opinion.
