Born Czechoslovakian to Jewish parents, Konrad Sigmund Rodan was twice an expatriate, in 1939, when the Nazis invaded, and in 1946, when, having returned home after the second world war, he fled communist oppression. His pathology training was at The London Hospital during the war. In 1948 he was appointed pathologist to Southlands Hospital, and for nearly 30 years he led the development of pathology services in West Sussex. Owing to his drive and determination, new laboratories were built both in Worthing and Chichester in the 1970s. He subspecialized in haematology. His diagnostic ability, prodigious energy, and infectious enthusiasm earned him the lasting respect of his technical staff and fellow pathologists.
Predeceased by his first wife, Margaret, in 1990, he leaves a second wife, Jean; a son from his first marriage; and two stepchildren.
