Vincent Dolan (“Vinny”) was born in Dublin and educated at Blackrock College. He graduated from University College Dublin in 1996 and completed his membership training in the Mater Hospital, Dublin, and the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio. He specialised in nephrology and worked as a specialist registrar in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, for two years. In 2005 he was awarded a PhD by University College Dublin for his research on a new protein, gremlin, in diabetic nephropathy. This work was carried out in the Conway Institute, Dublin, and University College, London. Vinny continued his specialist training at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 2004. He received his CCST in 2007 and worked as a locum consultant nephrologist in the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, in the months before his death.
Vinny was an outstanding student and won numerous prizes and medals at university, yet remained characteristically modest and unassuming. He was highly respected by his colleagues and dearly loved by patients and friends. His generosity and keen sense of humour were legendary, and his energy and enthusiasm for life were limitless. He was an avid reader of history and enjoyed travelling with his beloved wife, Brid. He was a devoted and proud father to his daughter, Aisling, born in November 2006. He died suddenly and unexpectedly while on holiday in Italy on the 17 April 2007.
He leaves his wife, Brid; daughter, Aisling; parents, Peter and Eileen; brother, Neil; and sister, Eithne.
Locum consultant nephrologist University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff (b 14 September 1972, q University College Dublin 1996; PhD), died from dissection of the ascending aorta in Italy on 17 April 2007.
