Abstract
1. Physicians should be more aware of the causes, identification, treatment facilities and prognosis of handicapping conditions.
2. The physician should be prepared to provide continuing care for handicapped individuals as well as continuing support for the family.
3. Physicians must be involved in community planning for these individuals at various ages.
4. The physician is in the best position to coordinate a total program for multiple handicapped individuals, and in such a position, he must appreciate the important role played by allied health specialists.
5. The aim of any rehabilitation program is to enable the individual to reach his maximal potential allowable by the handicap. The success of this will depend on the personnel and facilities available as well as on the motivation of the individual.
