Abstract
Of 481 women presenting at a downtown clinic, 55% (269) were pregnant. Of these, only 23% (63) carried the pregnancy to term. All the women were sexually active; 49% used no contraception and only five were known to be seeking pregnancy. Effective contraceptive use rose from 4.4% in 1976 to 19.4% in 1977. Of the women who were pregnant, 61% presented at six to eight weeks of gestation; 26.5% of them had already had at least one abortion. Early intervention by family practitioners is suggested.
