Small bowel obstruction with multiple perforations due to enterolith (bezoar) formed without gastrointestinal pathology.

Abstract

An enterolith (bezoar) usually originates in an intestinal diverticulum or in a segment of bowel loculated by stricture formation. Stasis promotes its formation. This communication describes a case in which a large enterolith caused obstruction and multiple perforations of the terminal ileum in the absence of any predisposing gastrointestinal pathology. The management of this rare occurrence is discussed and the literature reviewed.
