The lon Gene and Degradation of β-Galactosidase Nonsense Fragments

Abstract

N-terminal β-galactosidase fragments are rapidly degraded in growing cells of Escherichia coli. Mutations in the lon gene are sufficient to enhance the stability of these polypeptides.
