Structural Difference Between Walls from Ends and Sides of the Rod-Shaped Bacterium Bacillus subtilis

Abstract

Electron microscopy studies show that walls from ends of Bacillus subtilis cells are more resistant to autolytic degradation that walls from sides of the same cells. This observation suggests that these two parts of the cell are structurally different. A method is available for the isolation of walls from ends of cells.
