Abstract

Virological surveillance of poliomyelitis was used for predicting an epidemic early in 1972. A nationwide immunization campaign was undertaken, lay volunteers helping health staff to give the vaccinations. The epidemic was curtailed. The organization, implementation, and achievements of the campaign are discussed.
