Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease: A report of a case

Abstract

The nature of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition disease is reviewed and illustrated with a case report. CPPD is one of several calcium-containing crystals to be found in various pathological tissues which are associated with abnormal cellular localizations of proteoglycan. Clinically and radiologically it is an age-related disorder which resembles osteoarthritis and is sometimes interspersed with attacks of acute arthritis. Diagnostic and case management aspects of relevance to chiropractic are considered.

Keywords: CPPD, spinal stenosis, posterior column disease, chiropractic, manipulation
