A reliability assessment of four-quadrant weight-scale measurements

Abstract

Instrumentation such as the four-quadrant weight scale is used routinely in chiropractic practice. However, a review of the literature suggests that very little has been done to statistically evaluate this instrumentation along such basic parameters as reliability and/or validity.

This study evaluates a four-quadrant weight scale in terms of form-associated and time-associated reliability. The results indicate that for any given subject at least four distinct weight determinations should be recorded within a fifty second time frame. It is suggested that the mean of the weight determinations be calculated for clinical use.
