Clinical experience with the diaphanograph machine.

Abstract

Transillumination is a recently revived technique, now available, for examination of the breast. It may be used as a supplement or possible alternative to mammography. Fifty-four women were examined with a diaphanograph machine made by Sinus Medical Equipment of Sweden. We feel that, in its present form, its use should be confined to assessing individuals with diffusely nodular breasts requiring prolonged follow-up with repeated examinations. The sensitivity of the technique is discussed. We have not found that use of the machine, combined with clinical examination, can reduce the number of open breast biopsies needed. Use of the flash unit and infra-red camera has not been shown to improve diagnostic accuracy, an experience in common with other workers (3).
