Abstract

In Finland COSTAR V based patient information systems are becoming a national de facto standard for both ambulatory care and hospital patient information systems. Helsinki University Central Hospital is developing a large distributed patient information system using MUMPS and several software packages including File Manager and a Finnish version of COSTAR. As a first step we have implemented an out-patient information system in the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. The differences between original COSTAR and our system are discussed along with evaluation of the new distributed system in the light of 10 years experience with centralized patient database system on a mainframe. Within the next few years, an integrated patient information system with hospital in- and out-patient, clinical pathology and primary care functions will be completed.
