Abstract
Automating the information systems of DoD Medical Treatment Facilities is estimated to result in significant quantifiable benefits. This does not include evaluation of the benefits of improved outcome of care, improved satisfaction with health care services, or support for sudden contingencies. Several categories of benefits of automation are significant—improved utilization of provider and patient time, decreases in supply costs, and decreases in utilization of services—and no single category dominates the predicted total benefits.
The majority of benefits will be realized only by implementation of integrated information systems, with the patient record and automated order entry and results reporting as core elements. The cost savings due to automation will be greatest in large hospitals. However, the benefits associated with improved access, quality, and satisfaction with care are likely to be as or more important in the many small hospitals of the Department of Defense.
