David read natural sciences at Cambridge, after national service, and went to St Mary's Hospital, London, for his clinical studies. He joined his father in general practice in Chelsea, eventually becoming a singlehanded practitioner, ably assisted by his wife, Jean. He was a keen swimmer and golfer, and had played a round on the morning of his death. That evening David took part in a traditional half mile swimming race in the river Thames. He was observed swimming strongly 300 yards down the course but he did not complete the race.
