The CFPC’s 2008 honours and awards

One of the highlights of Family Doctor Week in Canada is the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of the hundreds of family physicians who have contributed or achieved something special over the past year. Many of these individuals were acknowledged, along with all of our new Certificants and Fellows, during Family Medicine Forum 2008, held in Toronto, Ont, from November 27 to 29. The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and our 22 000 members congratulate the following honourees:

W. Victor Johnston Award

Dr Joanna Bates, Vancouver, BC

This award honours the memory of the late Dr W. Victor Johnston, the CFPC’s first Executive Director, from 1954 to 1964. The recipient is recognized for leadership in family medicine in Canada or internationally and presents the W. Victor Johnston Oration at the CFPC’s annual Convocation. Dr Bates is the founding director of the newly formed Centre for Health Education Scholarship in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. She is a long-standing contributor to and leader in family medicine education and evaluation at the University of British Columbia, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia, the Medical Council of Canada, and the CFPC.

These awards, named in honour of Dr Reg L. Perkin, CFPC Executive Director from 1985 to 1996, recognize outstanding CFPC family physician members who exemplify the best of what being a family doctor is all about: embodying the 4 principles of family medicine through contributions to patient care, teaching, research, and community services. These awards are supported by the CFPC, the Research and Education Foundation (REF), Health Canada, and Merck Frosst Canada Ltd.

Donald I. Rice Award

Dr David Tannenbaum, Toronto, Ont

This award, named in memory of the late Dr Donald I. Rice, CFPC Executive Director from 1965 to 1985, recognizes an outstanding CFPC family physician member for contributions to teaching and leadership in our discipline. Dr Tannenbaum is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto and the Family Physician–in–Chief in the Ray D. Wolfe Department of Family Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital. He has an active comprehensive clinical practice that includes obstetric care and he teaches family medicine residents and medical students in the Granovsky Gluskin Family Medicine Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he also leads the recently established family health team. This award is supported by the CFPC and donations to the D.I. Rice Fund of the REF.

Jean-Pierre Despins Award

Dr Philip Berger, Toronto, Ont

This award, named in memory of the late Dr Jean-Pierre Despins, CFPC President from 1995 to 1996 and Chair of the Board of the REF from 1999 to 2000, honours a CFPC family physician member identified as an outstanding advocate and public spokesperson for family medicine, family physicians, and patients. Dr Berger is Chief of the Department of Family and Community Medicine and Medical Director of the Inner City Health Program at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. He is recognized for his work on behalf of patients with HIV and AIDS over the past 30 years, including his work with the Ontario Hospital Association’s AIDS initiative (OHAfrica Project) at the Tšepong (Place of Hope) Clinic in Leribe, Lesotho. This award is supported by the CFPC and donations to the J-P Despins Fund of the REF.

Ian McWhinney Family Medicine Education Award

Dr David Gass, Halifax, NS

This award, named in honour of Dr Ian McWhinney, the first Professor and Chair of a Canadian University Department of Family Medicine (University of Western Ontario, 1968 to 1987), is presented to a family medicine teacher in recognition of his or her outstanding contribution to family medicine education. Dr Gass is currently the District Chief of Medical Staff for the Cumberland Health Authority in Nova Scotia. His leadership has included chairing the Canadian Medical Association Council on Medical Education and the CFPC’s committees on assessment and evaluation (accreditation) and ethics; and he is a member of the Steering Group for the Future of Medical Education in Canada Project. This award is supported by the CFPC and donations to the Ian McWhinney Fund of the REF.

Family Medicine Researcher of the Year

Dr Ann Macaulay, Montreal, Que

This award honours a family medicine researcher who has been a pivotal force in, and has made an original contribution to, family medicine research. Dr Macaulay was the first physician to be hired by the Mohawk community of Kahnawake. She launched the Kahnawake Schools Diabetes Prevention Project in 1994. In 2006, she became the inaugural director of Participatory Research at McGill. She was awarded an Order of Canada for her contributions to aboriginal health and Foreign Member status in the Institutes of Medicine for advancing participatory research.

Hollister King Rural Family Practice Scholarship

This award honours the late Dr Douglas Robb, a Past President of the New Brunswick Chapter of the CFPC from 1979 to 1980. This award supports the research activities of a community-based family physician.

CFPC Outstanding Family Medicine Research Article

This award recognizes the best research article published in a national or international journal during the preceding year that was based on family medicine research carried out by a CFPC member.

FELLOWSHIP

Fellowship in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (FCFP) is an honour the CFPC confers upon Certificant members who have maintained their membership and Certification for a minimum of 10 consecutive years, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to continuing professional development and lifelong learning. The names of CFPC Fellows for 2008 can be found at www.cfpc.ca/awards.

LIFE MEMBERS

Life membership is awarded to those 70 or older who have been CFPC members in good standing for at least 10 consecutive years immediately before the date of nomination. The names of Life Members for 2008 can be found at www.cfpc.ca/awards.
