The Canadian Cardiovascular Society in 2007

PMCID: PMC2649166

Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) programs and member contributions advance knowledge and clinical practice in cardiovascular health and care.

The Canadian Cardiovascular Congress (CCC) showcases advances in science, challenges and treatments of cardiovascular disease, and is the largest meeting place for leading cardiovascular experts in Canada. The 2006 Congress in Vancouver was an outstanding meeting, with over 1000 papers and posters presented by delegates registered under 12 cardiovascular health and care disciplines. This year, from October 20 to 24 in Quebec City, the CCS will celebrate its 60th anniversary and the extraordinary work of its members at the 2007 CCC. Look for more in-depth information about the Congress and the 60th anniversary celebrations at <www.ccs.ca>.

Cardiovascular community members can further access the Congress experience with a new program in conjunction with theheart.org, available on the CCS Web site or directly at <www.theheart.org>. To eliminate geographical and time barriers for health care professionals who are unable to attend the CCC, videotaped plenary sessions and presentations may be viewed and online evaluations completed. This new program not only reaches those unable to attend the CCC, but it also provides access to world-class scientific content and learning experiences for those who have not experienced the CCC.

Dr Malcolm Arnold Heart Failure Primary Panel Member CCC 2006 – Consensus Conference Presentation

Heart failure prevention and treatment are the most pressing issues for cardiovascular health and care professionals. The CCS Heart Failure Consensus Program addresses this with updated Canadian recommendations for prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of heart failure. In addition, the Program includes a series of tools to better assist health care professionals in their practice. These tools were developed by CCS members and allied health care professionals, and include a clinical pocket guide, educational slide kit and heart failure workshops conducted at regional meetings. These tools are available on the CCS Web site under ‘Heart Failure Consensus Conference’ in the main menu. This CCS Heart Failure Consensus program is providing prominent visibility of the CCS heart failure recommendations in the cardiovascular community across Canada.

Wait time benchmarks for access to cardiovascular services have been developed by more than 60 CCS members and other cardiovascular health care professionals from across the country. These benchmarks address the wait for access to cardiovascular services from the patients’ perspective and are available in the publication “Universal access: But when? Treating the right patient at the right time” and on the CCS Web site under ‘Position Statements/Public Policy’ in the main menu. These benchmarks have been adopted by cardiovascular centres as wait time targets for various services and used by members to advocate with government stakeholders for appropriate resources within their communities. The Access to Care Working Group has increased the visibility and importance of this issue across all levels of government and health care within Canada.

The benefits of CCS membership are realized by academic and community cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, pediatric cardiologists, trainees in these fields, researchers and other health care professionals who comprise the CCS membership. We would like to welcome all those new members who have chosen to belong to a national organization that continues to advocate for improved cardiovascular health care for Canadians.

ON BEHALF OF THE COUNCIL, WELCOME TO THE NEWEST CCS MEMBERS!
