Fig. 1: Neonatal meconium assay for fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs). Most of the body's load of ethanol is eliminated after enzyme oxidation to acetaldehyde and water. However, ethanol is also esterified with fatty acids to FAEEs, which can be found in adult blood and tissue.
