The Comatose Patient, by Eelco F. M. Wijdicks, MD, PhD, FACP, 583 pp, with illus, $125, New York, NY, Oxford University Press (telephone: 800-451-7556), 2008, ISBN 978-0-19-532626-0
Type and Scope of Book: Dr Eelco Wijdicks is the sole author of this book that provides a comprehensive and contemporary look at the understanding and management of the comatose patient.
Contents: This book provides a multifaceted approach to the diagnosis and management of the comatose patient. The first part consists of clinical knowledge of comatose states, including historical aspects of coma, neuroanatomic and physiologic considerations, diagnostic approaches and general management strategies, legal and bioethics, and coma as portrayed in popular culture. The second part provides 75 clinical vignettes on specific conditions (from traumatic brain injury to conversion disorder) associated with coma, personally collected by the author. Representing the vast majority of etiologies of coma in any medical, surgical, or neurological intensive care unit, the discussion of these clinical vignettes includes specific diagnostic and therapeutic options. The book also comes with an instructional DVD that demonstrates evaluation of the comatose patient and a pocket guide to the FOUR (Full Outline of Unresponsiveness) score, a tool developed by the author to assess comatose patients.
Strengths: This book is written by an expert neurointensivist with the knowledge base to address this difficult topic and the practice experience to manage these patients who have challenging issues. In contrast to several texts on this topic that focus mainly on pathophysiology and diagnosis, this book is more comprehensive and relevant to the clinician at the bedside because it provides not only pathophysiologic and diagnostic approaches but also detailed management options for common and uncommon etiologies of coma.
Deficiencies: As the book captures the current state of care of the comatose patient, a major deficiency is noted not in the book but in the depth of knowledge on coma itself. Although important clinical observations and diagnostic modalities are provided, many of these are based on best evidence available from historical accounts and extrapolations from animal studies, case reports, and case series. Thus, there is a need for reexamination or validation using state-of-the-art techniques and better clinical study design. With some exceptions, many of the management options provided, although consistent with best clinical practices, are not supported by well-designed clinical trials.
Recommended Readership: The pervasiveness of the unresponsive patient in intensive care units of every kind highlights the importance of this book for health care professionals in the critical care setting, especially general and specialty intensivists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, anesthesiologists, emergency physicians, internists, surgeons, hospitalists, and critical care nurses. Physicians and nurses in training will also benefit from this book.

Promoting Health for Working Women, edited by Athena Linos and Wilhelm Kirch, 338 pp, with illus, $74.95, New York, NY, Springer (telephone: 800-777-4643), 2008, ISBN 978-0-387-73037-0
Type and Scope of Book: A multiauthored review of the current state of knowledge surrounding health promotion for working women in Europe.
Contents: The editors have taken a broad view of health promotion and have set out to understand how the experience of women in the workplace may have unique effects on women's health. They have done an excellent job of looking at health risks and opportunities for prevention from both organizational and population perspectives as well as from the perspective of the individual. This gives a robust picture with many opportunities to generate new questions for research and to envision new opportunities for intervention. Topics covered range from theoretical concepts and traditional health risk behaviors to occupational exposures and specific issues surrounding reproductive health and breast feeding.
Strengths: This readable and well-organized book strikes an excellent balance between theory and practicality. It uses a well thought-out framework to explore the health risks of working women and strategies to minimize those risks.
Deficiencies: The book is intended primarily to review the status of the health of working women in Europe, and so certain chapters, such as the one on the legal context, might not be interesting to some readers. The book also relies on some cultural assumptions that might be less true in other developed countries.
Recommended Readership: Women's health experts in occupational medicine, public health, and internal medicine. Anyone interested in understanding the health challenges facing women in the workplace today will find the book valuable.

Perioperative Medicine: Managing for Outcome, edited by Mark F. Newman, Lee A. Fleisher, and Mitchell P. Fink, 723 pp, with illus, $179, Philadelphia, PA, Saunders (telephone: 800-545-2522), 2008, ISBN 978-1-4160-2456-9
Type and Scope of Book: A comprehensive, multiauthored review of preoperative evaluation and perioperative and postoperative management of surgical patients.
Contents: The editors have compiled the current available evidence to summarize care of perioperative patients. The book is divided into 3 parts. The preoperative section summarizes the current recommendations regarding presurgical testing. The perioperative section focuses on intraoperative and immediate postoperative management by systems, including cardiovascular, renal, pulmonary, nervous, and infectious. A section on care of the pregnant patient is included. The third section on management of postoperative patients is organized by type of surgery and problems, such as postoperative delirium and pain. The book closes with a look at cost-effectiveness and pay for performance.
Strengths: This review is comprehensive and well-referenced. The editors have focused on evidence-based medicine and outcomes and have presented the best available evidence for their recommendations at the time of publication. The algorithms are easy to navigate.
Deficiencies: Some newer guidelines are not included, such as the updated recommendations for endocarditis prophylaxis and the 2007 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Guidelines for Perioperative Cardiovascular Evaluation. Some chapters are heavy on basic sciences and pathophysiology, which makes readability of those chapters difficult.
Recommended Readership: Residents, fellows, and attending physicians in internal medicine, cardiology, critical care medicine, surgery, and anesthesiology.

The Active Female: Health Issues Throughout the Lifespan, edited by Jacalyn J. Robert-McComb, Reid Norman, and Mimi Zumwalt, 458 pp, with illus, $99.50, Totowa, NJ, Humana Press (telephone: 973-256-1699), 2008, ISBN 978-1-58829-730-3
Type and Scope of Book: A comprehensive, evidence-based reference to assist learners and teachers in understanding the common issues that physically active females confront.
Contents: The editors have divided the book into 6 sections: unique sex-related issues, body image and eating issues, reproductive health, musculoskeletal injuries, safe exercises, and nutrition, energy balance, and weight control. The impact throughout the lifespan is emphasized, which adds a dimension not generally expressed in reference texts. Instructional materials are provided, including a thorough appendix and a questions/answers section. A CD accompanies the text that includes PowerPoint lecture notes and slide presentations. The editors encourage use of these materials for educational opportunities such as workshops, courses, or conferences on women's health issues.
Strengths: This text is comprehensive and well-referenced. It is innovative in that it presents this scope of material in a nontraditional manner. Instructional materials, especially slide presentations, will be useful to the educator.
Deficiencies: The outline format takes some getting used to when reading the text.
Recommended Readership: Health educators, obstetricians, gynecologists, professionals in sports medicine, general practitioners, or allied health professionals with an interest in caring for athletic girls and women.

Contents: This reference book provides physicians with sound recommendations on how to correctly communicate with patients after an adverse event. The authors encourage smart transparency by guiding physicians through the “do's and don'ts” of the disclosure process.
Strengths: This well-organized text provides physicians and risk managers with useful information they can easily understand and apply to their practice.
Deficiencies: None noted.
Recommended Readership: Physicians, medical students, risk managers, and health law attorneys.
