A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

This is the theme of the inaugural Canadian Respiratory Conference to be held in Montreal, Quebec, June 19 to 22, 2008. The Canadian Thoracic Society, the Canadian Respiratory Health Professionals, the Canadian COPD Alliance and the Canadian Lung Association are excited to be working together to host the entire Canadian respiratory community for our own national meeting. And with the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Thoracic Society being celebrated next year, 2008 is the ideal time to host a truly ‘Canadian’ event to help celebrate the accomplishments and proud history of our organization. The conference will also specifically assist us in fulfilling our mission: “The Canadian Thoracic Society promotes lung health by supporting the respiratory community through leadership, collaboration, research, learning and advocacy, and by promoting the best respiratory practices in Canada.”

NOW IS THE TIME FOR A CANADIAN CONFERENCE!

By bringing together the leading national organizations in respiratory health in Canada, the conference is a natural extension of the growth and high standing in our community of clinicians, multidisciplinary health care professionals, scientists and educators, who have developed an excellent reputation both locally and internationally in the field of respiratory medicine. The world leaders in our field work and live right here in Canada – they are our colleagues. The conference will therefore be of special interest to members of our clinical and scientific communities, including pediatric and adult respirologists, scientists, residents and fellows in training, thoracic surgeons, family physicians, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, nurses and nurse clinicians, dieticians, pharmacists, social workers and other individuals working in the respiratory field.

LET US ALL MEET TOGETHER!

Under the leadership of Scientific Program Chair Roger Goldstein, and Co-Chairs Pat Camp and Rob McFadden, an enthusiastic and dedicated program committee has been working hard to design an exceptional conference program. Keynote speakers with international stature have already confirmed their participation. Multiple concurrent programs with various tracks will promote learning and discussion of the most significant and recent developments in clinical practice, research and education. Themed sessions will provide cross-sectional appeal for a diverse audience, and all plenary sessions will include simultaneous translation. The extensive scientific program will be flanked by society, committee, training, scientific and workshop ancillary meetings. For example, we are excited that the Canadian Respiratory Resident-Fellow Research Competition (co-hosted by the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and once again generously supported by GlaxoSmithKline) will be held June 18 to 19 in conjunction with the conference. The Canadian Respiratory Clinical Research Consortium, under the leadership of Shawn Aaron, will also be convening at this time. Many more events are being scheduled and will be announced as they are finalized.

THIS IS GOING TO BE A BIG CANADIAN MEETING!

And what about meeting together in Montreal in June, when the entire city will be coloured with the excitement of spring? Montreal truly defines our country, and it is a city where culture flourishes. A city with something for everyone. Shopping, restaurants, museums, tourist attractions, night-life and shopping (…did I mention that before?) – everything someone (and their spouses and families) ‘attending’ the conference would ever need or want.

MONTREAL IS A GREAT CITY TO HOST THE 2008 CANADIAN RESPIRATORY CONFERENCE!

You will be receiving a formal conference notification shortly. This will include more detailed conference highlights, as well as early registration and hotel information. In addition, information about poster and abstract submission deadlines will also be included. Please share the information with your colleagues and anyone else you think might attend this wonderful event. And do not forget to keep checking back to our Web site (www.lung.ca/cts) for the latest updates and information about the meeting.

PLAN TO ATTEND THE CANADIAN RESPIRATORY CONFERENCE JUNE 19 TO 22, 2008, IN MONTREAL!
